Reason To Smile

Memory, sweet with distance Dusty zinnia across the fence The hot smell of summer dying Hot enough to steal your breath Barely time to wonder on it And sleep on it all alone Flying high on hope Sinking like a gravestone So we make a plan Hope that fate cooperates With silvery, warm tears Hearts bending, breaking, bright I’m taking time for today Nothing changes, just stays the same Time is missing for the time being A foolish, reckless game So we make a plan Hope that fate cooperates With silvery, warm tears Hearts bending, breaking, bright Memory, sweet with distance Dusty zinnia across the fence The hot smell of summer dying Hot enough to steal your breath The hot smell of summer dying Hot enough to steal your breath

Home Grown 02:24
On a long meandering walk Spy a shining penny as you pass A nickel, dime in the gutter Bright bauble in the grass Today’s what we’ve got It has a lot to make known Spikes of happiness Mystic advice wind blown Open the windows to greet the day Sit on the porch and watch the rain Look to the dim, misty past Hear the sad, fractured, sweet refrain Today’s what we’ve got It has a lot to make known Spikes of happiness Mystic advice home grown Newspapers without headlines blaring Boredom beyond repair Hearing solitude’s quiet voice In the soft kiss of summer air Today’s what we’ve got It has a lot to make known Spikes of happiness Mystic advice wind blown Spikes of happiness Mystic advice home grown

Just keep on shining like you do Free in your authenticity and style Living the beauty of your truth Each day brings a new reason to smile Take a joy in being bad at things Splash yourself with that joy awhile Being fearless is crazy important Each day brings a new reason to smile Simple living is a great luxury Pack light for a lifetime or a mile And just stand there shining Each day brings a new reason to smile Practice medicine of mercy Get caught trying anytime; meanwhile Beware the smallness of our perspective Choose to look at the faces that smile Wake to the crest of a new-day sunrise Ignore the shadow on the sundial We’ll do our best and forget the rest Each day brings a new reason to smile Choose to look at the faces that smile Get caught trying anytime; meanwhile Practice the medicine of mercy Each day brings a new reason to smile We’ll do our best and forget the rest Each day brings a new reason to smile

The Waves 02:21
As close together as bus passengers In uncritical sunshine sumptuous Defining prudent parameters And making the waves come to us Water glittering like crumpled foil Sun pale in a pale sky tumultuous Hearing laughter in the back of his voice And making the waves come to us Wind as sweet as birdsong Smelled like the breath of heaven continuous No real sense of right or wrong We were making the waves come to us Time, after all, did not pass As you expect it would unto dust ... That day was a thousand years long We were making the waves come to us Insignificant outrageous things Touched me like a storm ambiguous His hair smelled like the sea. We were making the waves come to us The world came flooding back in Rude and charged with joy conspicuous ... Airy flowers and green, green vines And still the waves come to us The dream melted; As dreams will Full of echoes and ghosts useless Our feelings for each other never seemed clear While making the waves come to us That day was a thousand years long We were making the waves come to us

Morning 03:10
Morning, still half asleep Fresh spring air and filtered sun Recall the words, nearly written Scattered on the kitchen table Smile, listen The clean smell of fresh linen And slightly eccentric cast of her mind Brain firing burning flame Her sweet and curious unforced habit Smile, listen Examine the fan’s operation; Her face still crumpled with sleep Her youth was really just a hobby This tho is oh so real. So... Smile, listen To the corkscrew quirkiness That ignites her inner shine. Dust motes and tinkling notes And to say a true thing simply Smile, listen Truth as clear as water ... Truth as clear as glass ... Truth as clear as sunlight ... Truth as clear as morning Smile, listen Smile, listen Smile, listen

I see some people in the world today Carrying bucketloads of spite that’s venomous Like a box full of darkness, not liberty When what we need is a revolution of tenderness It’s hard to make good choices when you’re unaware of making a choice Pull apart the patterns that threaten us And bring on a revolution of tenderness If you want to go quickly, go alone You’ll find yourself wandering in the wilderness If you want to go far, go together Cuz what we need is a revolution of tenderness Something considerable is coming A frozen and furious peace to strengthen us Bright, hard, shining, and true What we need is a revolution of tenderness Light against the darkness of my dreams A tremendous fuss of togetherness Light against the darkness of delusion What we need is a revolution of tenderness If you want to go quickly, go alone You’ll find yourself wandering in the wilderness If you want to go far, go together Cuz what we need is a revolution of tenderness What we need is a revolution of tenderness We need a revolution of tenderness

about

Reason To Smile is a collection of some songs I wrote between June 2021 and April 2022, and recorded this year in my home studio. When I sang these songs, I imagined you in the room with me, and I hope you feel that way, too, when you listen. These songs are children of a pandemic, and range in mood from melancholy to hopeful, from wistful to downright annoyed. Thanks for listening, and I hope you enjoy my songs. ☮️🌻🎶
